Chambarak

The town of Chambarak, surrounded by picturesque landscapes, is located in Gegharkunik region, only 125 km far from Yerevan. The town is located in the so – called Getik valley at 1860 meters above sea level.

The name Chambarak refers to an ancient settlement that existed on the present town’s place during the Middle Ages. The beauty of Chambarak is seen in alpine mountains, clean rivers & pristine nature untouched by industrial factories & greenhouse emissions.

About 5000 people live in this town in Gegharkunik region, under the shadow of high mountains. Once multi-national Chambarak is now inhabited mostly by Armenians.

Chambarak region is diverse in food & meals as the area was populated by various ethnical groups since ages.

Chambarak is considered an eco – friendly region, as no metal mines or industrial factories ever existed in the territory with a radius of 60 km.

Compared to other regions of Armenia, the population of Chambarak was rather multinational; Russians, Jews, Azeris and Armenians used to live altogether in the region bringing their cultural heritage to the area.

Due to favorable climatic conditions and geographical location, Chambarak is one of the favorite places for extreme tourism lovers and winter adventures.

Nowadays, locals are involved in cattle-breeding, grain and vegetable cultivating, as well as rural tourism.

The historical monuments of the territory are the ruins of churches of 11th and 15th-16th centuries and more than 20 cross-stones (Armenian khachkars) from different periods.

The fortress of “Galustakar” located on the right bank of the River Getik dates back to the 2nd-1st millennium BC. 

There are 10 cemeteries in the community, with some of the most remarkable cemeteries belonging to Jewish subdivisions and the Molokans (2-1 millennia B.C).

Festivals in Chambarak

On December 22-23, 2018 in the city park of Chambarak first time have been organized festival-fair “Snowy Fairytale”. During the festival tourists and visitor had a chance to participate in master classes, to do shopping from local people and get acquainted with city life and history. Attractions Chambarak It is impossible not to be admired with beauty of cultural heritage in Chmabarak, which came through the time. There are lot of historical places and monuments, which are different with their period of construction. There are existing fortresses and churches that have been built during B.C 2-1 centaury.
